It’s Time to Move Your Way

January 31, 2019

The new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans state that, “being physically active is one of the most important actions that people of all ages can take to improve their health.” There are many benefits that start immediately after being physically active, as well as the long-term health benefits.

Benefits of physical activity:

  • growth and development
  • better sleep
  • improved brain cognition for youth
  • reduced risk of cancer and other chronic diseases
  • reduced anxiety and depression
  • reduced risk of fall- related injuries

New Guidelines and the Utah Health Values Study

The Utah Health Values Study found that the largest barriers Utahns face when it comes to physical activity are time, energy, and convenience. The new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Move Your Way campaign directly addresses these barriers. The campaign is a set of tools and resources to encourage Americans to be physically active in ways that they enjoy and fit best into their lives. Anything that gets Americans moving counts as exercise! The campaign focuses on the immediate benefits of physical activity, which the Utah Health Values Study found motivates Utahns, and also addresses personal values, such as family time.

Here are some ways to Move Your Way:

  • yard work or gardening
  • household chores
  • dancing
  • playing catch with your kids
  • going on a family walk
  • swimming
  • walking your dog
  • active play with friends
